Online communication has usually been a long and drawn-out process. Recently, twitter.com has evolved that beyond the typical layout to include better communication tools for people.
Twitter is a website that allows you to post up to 140 character long mini blog posts to your site online. You can write these from most mobile devices, or from the site itself. There's even utilities that will read RSS feeds and link to them automatically in your Twitter!
Updating your Twitter with the things you do in the day can give the people that know you information they didn't know that normally wouldn't be asked. It might be socially awkward to ask all of your friends if they read a new book that came out, but by reading that they are reading that book online, you have a better idea of what they are doing.
Twitter has a follow/friend relationship between people. If you find someone interesting, follow them and their updates appear on your front page. If someone finds you interesting, they'll follow you.
All of this may seem strange to the new user, and I thought so too, until I realized how powerful Twitter is with communication. Think Facebook Status, just without the Facebook.
There's so many people using Twitter nowadays that it has become almost expected in some communities that people have it, and exchange their information back and forth through it. Many companies have tech support departments that reply specifically to messages through Twitter, effectively meaning that you never have to wait on hold for tech support again if you have a quick question to ask.
Give Twitter a try. It's fast, easy, free, and could change the way you communicate with your friends and colleagues every day.
